8000 emails to the Indian Environment Minister was one of the factors which led him to forbid the proposed India-based neutrino observatory from being built in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve.
Now another Indian elephant reserve is in danger - a huge bauxite mine threatens Niyamgiri Mountain in the state of Orissa, an ancient forest, home to elephants, tigars and leopards.
Niyamgiri is revered as a god by the Dongria Kondh tribal people who have vowed to fight to the death to stop this travesty.
Many forces support the mining company including India's Prime Minister. However, Jairam Ramesh, the same Environment Minister who protected the Nilgiris elephants is refusing to give clearance for the project. He needs the support of the international community.
